Wang Peng - Law of Perspective

Wang Peng is an important participant and promoter of "Conceptual art"in China. Since his “84’s Performance” , his works involved painting, performance, installation, photography and interactive media, etc.. After he graduated from CAFA in 1988, Wang Peng began his explorations on abstract painting. At that time because of the Soviet realism figurative tradition influence, nobody attached importance on abstraction art, it even had the "anti art" nature . In this premise Wang Peng had his solo show: Wang Peng Abstract Painting, in 1991. After 27 years, the exhibition Law of Perspective will present 18 major abstract paintings created by Wang Peng in 2010s, it is the first public show of these works.

Wang Peng claims in an essay about his abstraction art in 2012: “I do not think my abstract painting should be classified as abstract, in my understanding they are not contradictory to realistic painting, only they are far more real and closer to my inner feelings than the appeared world we normally see…” Compared with realistic painting, in the absence of literary plots and seeable appearances, without the renderings of secular contents, the functionality of objects in realistic paintings have been stripped from colors and shapes, making them more compatible with artist’s constructive thinking. Wang Peng adopts abstraction art for this reason. Wang Peng had a traditional realistic education background and he experienced 85 Trend Movement, his latter experience in the United States as a visiting artist brought him a multi-angle perspective toward culture, thus forming a diversified personal expression. This diversity is not only to be reflected in the variety of his art forms, but also to be embodied in the concrete context of each work. Law of Perspective shows a chronological section of the artist , which allows us to trace back Wang Peng’s creative path vertically, and meanwhile a world of visual is unfolded by him.

"Law of perspective" is the first show about abstraction art since the opening of the OCT Boxes Art Museum. It is known that the Boxes Art Museum is the first contemporary art museum in Shunde region, as the first presentation it is especially important for both the museum and the artist. When viewing Wang Peng's abstraction works, both the " transcendentalists" or the "empiricists" have the personal experience of being touched by the art works, which is the sincere expression of a mature artist.

To be coordinated by the curatorial group of the Oil Painting Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, Art and culture innovation and Development Research Center of Sun Yat-sen University is consultant of this show. The exhibition has been strongly supported by Shunde government. This exhibition will last until September 17th. Exhibitions of OCT Boxes Art Museum open to the public for free.
