This work was made while on a two month residency in the city of Guangzhou and it takes as inspiration the city itself and its surrounding urban sprawl. Laurence Cunnane's usual fascination with the dramatic potential of the mundane is present here as it is in most of his work. This is overtly referenced in the set like lighting in some of the work. There is an implication that this world is just a set or a series of props. This is a recurring theme in Laurence Cunnane's work. The aim of this project was to explore the underlying tension and sordidness of the unnoticed debris and overlooked oddities that escape progress. They fill the cracks between concrete and lighting, they are present in every overlooked corner and beneath every bridge. They are at once the outskirts and the nucleus of any city.
