Double-Skinned Milk, Significant Decoration

Yu Ji's "Decoration" series in "Double-Skinned Milk" project exhibition is based on the unique experience of licking and sucking the local Shunde double-skinned milk, and then imagined and created works with full of subjective images: the significant form is abstract and the color is brilliant and supernatural.

In order to highlight the flavor of its theme and make the work to have a perceptible decorative "objectivity" -- it tries to rely on a very important concept "quality" similar to the avant-garde of the early Soviet Union, so as to match the meaning similar to the title of the work -- therefore, the work is not presented in the form of general painting: First, Yu Ji chose industrial wood boards commonly used for home decoration, will cut into the shape of different appearance, which is a kind of uncertainty to define the scope of image edge, in order to break the conventional painting domain, and texture of ordinary through the material itself, though covered by high quality pigments, still reflects the inherent expensive work of art in the middle of the tension and fracture. Inside, a pair of circles and a rectangle form an ambiguous figure that is difficult to define. As a "given" symbol of this series, it is uniformly presented in each single piece. At the same time, it is also the visual "thorn point" of the limited similarity of the image of the work, thus completing the original key of the image, a swaying state. When this series is displayed on the wall, the arrangement and juxtaposition formed will make the "ambiguous graphics" in the middle of each "Decoration" combine into a recursive viewing cycle. Each work is painted with expressionist techniques, so that the works as objects and present different sense of color and lustre. Abstract painting can not shape the concrete daily image, color has become a major visual cognition.

Through these works, the unfamiliar and irregular appearance, ambiguous and minimalist graphics, non-concrete pictures outside of experience and abstract colors, the provocative appearance of abstract colors, flatly push away the audience, but also shorten the imagination of the audience in three dimensions. The black hole-like images will place the audience in a kind of gazing experience, to feel the unknowable recognition of the void landscape like space. At the same time, the recurring "ambiguous graph" will induce free association. Everyone can expand self-imagination and multiple interpretations of the graph to stir up the agitation of the image motif.

These form works of Yu Ji attack the essence of art and capital with "decorative discourse" like a spear in an attitude that seems to violate the purity of art. At the same time, it is a necessary gorgeous pendant under the high speed hedonism of the high quality class, a kind of artistic decoration. For a world full of decoration, under the capitalist system of contemporary art, and today the politicization of the epidemic diseases period, as a proletarian artisan, he can neither criticize capitalism blindly, nor reveal the conflicts, tensions and unnerves under the surface of class. By mixing pure artistic forms with practical materials, is Yu Ji describing art or decoration? Or Yu Ji used "decoration" to express that artists use their immaterial, perceptual and spiritual labor to create another world, and the autonomy of art and work objects they insist on is nothing but an unrepeatable interest that is difficult to defend in useless political mechanism, which will be captured by the dispositif of global capitalism. The cognitive labor of art itself is a kind of resistance. However, rather than getting rid of this dispositif, it is better to cycle with it in the resistance and in the intermediate cycle of getting rid of and starting with another.

Obviously, these works of Yu Ji, as a kind of conceptual art of functionalist decoration and capitalist daily decoration, both show the "quality of things" of decorative entities, and provide the possibility of adaptation or stimulation of a kind of heterogeneous interest and temporary aesthetic reflection.

Yu Ji was born in Qionglai of Chengdu, graduated from Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 1992. Since the mid 1990s, he creates freely with a variety of media and uncertain experimental approaches, and his works covered the f ields of performance, installation, photography, video and painting etc.

Yu Ji’s works had been collected by national art museum of China, Guangdong arts museum, Macao museum of art, M+ Contemporary Museum(Hong Kong), Fortress Contemporary Art Foundation(UK), and other art organizations, as well as Chinese and foreign personal collectors like Uli Sigg (Swiss), Willem (Holland), Mathieu (America) and so on.
