SWEET is a hand-drawn animation that I made during a two-month residency at the Boxes Art Museum, and it is also the first short music film I have ever made.
The short film is about a dream of a caterpillar living in an apple, and perhaps about soft memories and repeated melting time.
With the caterpillar as the main character, I felt that this image of a worm in an apple is kind of like a well-protected inner self. Being wrapped up in an apple is like being locked in a familiar room and falling asleep, layers and layers of a cheese-like heart being preserved.
I was once told by a friend, "I think you're like a colorful caterpillar with thorns, you look great but flatten out when you're swatted". It was the first time I heard this description about myself.
I felt a bit funny at the time but couldn't argue with it because it was true.
I thought of this metaphor from time to time as I slowly learnt more about myself, so I planned to dig out this caterpillar and present it in the animation.
The animation based on a song SWEET written by my friend Eva in high school. I've always wanted to make made a short music film before but I never, and it finally happened in this residency program. It started when I went to see Eva once and talked to her in the morning, while we communicate a lot as uaual. Suddenly, she said to me, "Let's listen to a song I wrote before," I immediately refused because I had already talked all night and my head was like mush, I just wanted to sleep and rest. But later I considered about it, I felt like I wasn't take kindly to her. Then I said, "Let's listen to it. I was immediately struck by the result and liked it so much that I decided to start creating this short music film, trying to translate the resonance of the melody in my head into a visual language. Thank you very much Eva.
Also, I haven't actually finished colouring the animation SWEET yet, but I think I'm grateful with it at this stage, so I decide to colour it later.
