Xiao Yong's artistic practice is not merely the manifestation of an artist's work but also embodies reflections on the world, disaster, and life. When floodwaters flowed through his studio in Ningxiang, Hunan, submerging the creative space on the first floor, "Repetition" became for him not only the meticulous deliberation and reconstruction of the same themes and motifs but also the courage and resolve to begin anew after destruction and dissolution.
"Multiplicity" stems from the irresistible "resetting" force of natural systems, while also metaphorically reflecting the cyclical nature of forgetting and remembering in human civilization. Just as he personally experienced during the flood event: water rapidly inundated the streets, destroying material possessions and leaving behind chaotic ruins. "Growth," meanwhile, signifies the emergence of new life from chaos. Here, art does not provide answers but instead, through individual scrutiny and expression, seeks light in darkness. Xiao Yong's work confronts disaster, anxiety, and loss, yet never abandons faith in the vitality of life.
The "Lemuria" and "Multiplicity - Growth" series featured in this exhibition are precisely the crystallization of such reflections. Through techniques such as image dislocation and material collision, the works reconstruct a visual narrative of destruction and rebirth. They are both an inquiry into disappearance and a metaphor for repetition. Amid the chaos of repetition, growth never ceases.
