Introduction
artist
Yang Jiecang is one of China’s most outstanding and thought provoking contemporary artists to appear since the Cultural Revolution. Born in Foshan, Guangdong in 1956; from the 1970’s to the 1980’s he was trained in classical Chinese calligraphy, and professionally in traditional Chinese painting. Yang Jiecang produces artworks in various media, such as painting, calligraphy, installation, performance and video. One sees a fusion of both traditional and contemporary in work by an artist whose greatest concern is how to display and put China’s traditional aesthetic thinking into use. The artist was part of the Land Magician exhibition in 1989 at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. From this point he lived in Paris, France and Heidelberg, Germany working as a professional artist.
He has exhibited all over the world; including in 1989 at the National Art Museum Of China’s China Avant-Garde Art Exhibition, in 1993 at the exhibition, Power of Silence, at the Oxford Modern Art Museum in the U.K., at the Paris Modern Art Museum’s 2000 exhibition, Paris as Central Hub, at the Shenzhen International Ink Biennale (1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2014), the Korea Guangzhou Biennale in 2002, the Venice Biennale in 2003, the Shanghai Biennale (1998, 2012), Guangzhou Triennale (2002, 2005, 2008), U.K.’s Liverpool Biennale (2006), France’s Lyons Biennale (2009), the Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition Contemporary Traditional Chinese Ink Painting: Past and Present in 2013, as well as the New York Guggenheim Museum exhibition World Stage in 2017.
