Introduction

The meaning of time lies in "existence", which is particularly evident in some extreme conditions. When we can only live in a restricted environment, in addition to the people and things around us, what remains is the constant perception of time dimension. But this kind of thinking based on the time dimension may not have any meaning itself, but it makes us begin to internalize and produce ideas. "Not much meaning, only too much time" is the presentation of Chen Tongyi and Chen Ansi when facing such a state.

In Chen Hunyi's "A Nonexistent Room", some fragmented images are presented, and the time and scene are frozen in the form of film. Whether the people and things in the scene can constitute a story doesn't seem to matter to her. She cares more about how to superimpose these images with the fields in people's spirits, thus germinate another emotional experience. In the work "Developing", Chen Yizhi decomposes time into visual image and auditory image. The ink in the infusion bag continually drips on the screen. With the ticking rhythm of time, the white shadow gradually appears after 14 days of baptism. When we have experienced the ticking of the clock for a long time and the images which become clearer as time goes by, we will find that the people and things in those scenes are ultimately turn to the "self". When these images are continuously superimposing in the consciousness of the self, new meanings come into being.

Chen Ansi's works are more inclined to tell her story through videos. We are most likely to present a "repetitive" state in blank time. Deleuze's repetitive thought holds that what is repetitive is actually difference. In the work "TURE? FALSE? NOT GIVEN?", people from different nationalities say the same word in front of the camera. This relationship of change and immutability makes the power of the work constantly strengthened in repetition and difference. In "Fountain", Chen Ansi projected three artificial landscapes of Qinghui Garden into the real natural environment, causing a contrast between natural reality and man-made power. The images in the video gradually become pixelated with time. When natural landscapes, artificial landscapes, and electronic pixels are slowly superimposed and repeated over time, we will have a deeper understanding of the relationship between human and nature.

So we will find that "Not much meaning, only too much time" brings us more than just the experience of time dimension. When we observe their work for a long time, the thinking about ourselves will appear, which is also initiated by these two young artists.

Chen Yizhi

Yizhi Chen, born in 1993, currently lives and works in Guangzhou, who is a young artist active in the field of contemporary art. She graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 2016 with a bachelor's degree. She obtained a master's degree from the Oil Painting Department of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 2019 and her supervisor is Professor Fan Bo. She won a series of Art Prize, such as the Inter-youth International Youth Painting Exhibition Creation Award in 2018, the winner of Luo Zhongli Scholarship in 2019, Top100 Artist of NEW STAR ART FESTIVAL, the emerging artists of The Signature Art Prize, etc. The works includes painting, video, installation, performance art, which often break the conventions of visual viewing, triggering viewers to enter the order established by the works - the narrative logic of the micro-painting and the macro-form composition of the reversal film in the viewing conflict, and also during this process the passiveness and initiative of viewing will become the order that the artist tries to construct, showing the richness and hierarchy of the works.
